Steven Knox, age 45, of New Britain, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, Nov. 2, to theft of government property, according to Leonard Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
In the early hours of May 19, about 43 tires were stolen from the tire shed of a USPS vehicle maintenance facility in Hartford, Boyle said.
Surveillance footage showed a pickup truck pulling up to the shed at about 1:30 a.m.
Boyle reported that Knox and another individual broke into the shed and loaded tires onto the truck before driving away.
Knox was a former employee of a USPS towing contractor, and he had a key card to enter the facility's gate, the US Attorney's Office reported.
Knox reportedly sold the stolen tires, which were valued at about $3,836, to a tire shop in New Britain for $1,500.
He was arrested on June 8, Boyle said.
Knox is set to be sentenced on Jan. 27, the US Attorney's Office reported.
